Misoperation Prevention and Control of Power Plant Stop Valve A156.33.01.01

Misoperation Prevention and Control of Power Plant Stop Valve A156.33.01.01

Having worked in a thermal power plant for many years, I know the importance of the manual stop valve A156.33.01.01. It is not only a key component for controlling steam flow, but also a “gatekeeper” to ensure system safety. But to be honest, this seemingly simple valve can have serious consequences if it is not operated properly. Today, I will talk about some of the experiences I have summarized in my actual work, hoping to help my colleagues.

1. Why is misoperation a taboo?

The opening and closing direction of the stop valve usually follows the rule of “clockwise closing, counterclockwise opening”, but in actual applications, many people have frequent accidents due to unclear markings or wrong operating habits. For example, I have seen a new colleague mistakenly turn the “close” direction to “open” during an emergency shutdown, resulting in an instant leakage of high-pressure steam, which almost caused a disaster.

What’s more troublesome is that the stop valve A156.33.01.01, which has been used for a long time, is prone to corrosion or wear on the markings on the handwheel. Once the operator judges the direction based on experience, the error rate will increase greatly. If the valve is rotated in the wrong direction, the valve stem may get stuck at best, or the equipment may be damaged at worst, and the maintenance cost is frighteningly high.

2. “Three-step error prevention method”

In many years of work, I have summarized a simple and effective error prevention method, which I would like to share with you:

  • Read the mark clearly and don’t rush to do it

Before each operation, I will first check whether the mark on the handwheel is clear. The red and green colors are the most basic to distinguish “off” and “on”, but if the mark is blurred, I will re-spray it with waterproof paint. I even add a yellow frame around the handwheel to make the operation direction more eye-catching.

  • Mechanical lock, add insurance to the operation

In high-risk areas (such as when the turbine is shut down for maintenance), I would recommend installing a mechanical lock. This device can physically limit the rotation direction of the handwheel. For example, when the valve is closed, the lock will jam the handwheel to prevent accidental opening. This is like adding “double insurance” to the stop valve, which is especially suitable for novice operation.

  • Operation training: Don’t let experience hurt you

Many old employees think they are experienced and tend to take it lightly when operating. But my experience tells me that the more familiar you are with the process, the more you should be alert to details. For example, when new employees join the company, I will take them to the site to demonstrate how to turn the handwheel correctly, and emphasize details such as “slow down, don’t turn it violently”. Because many accidents are caused by careless operation.

In addition, I will organize simulation drills regularly. For example, deliberately set up a stop valve with a blurred mark so that operators can practice how to judge the direction. This kind of “actual combat training” is much more effective than simply talking about theory.

3. Daily maintenance: Don’t be bothered, saving trouble means saving risks

The stop valve A156.33.01.01 is not made of iron, it also needs “maintenance”. I check once a month whether the handwheel mark is faded and the valve stem is rusted. If the mark is blurred, make up for it immediately; if the valve stem is stuck, apply some lubricating oil.

There is also a little trick: before operating, gently turn the handwheel a few times by hand. If it feels particularly strenuous, it means that something may be wrong. At this time, you have to stop and check. Don’t regret it when you can’t turn it anymore, it will be too late.

Manual stop valve A156.33.01.01 may look inconspicuous, but it is the “lifeline” of the steam turbine system. Whether it is clear markings, mechanical locks, or two-person operation and daily maintenance, every step is related to the safety of the entire power plant. To this end, our factory has taken three improvement measures:

  • Replacement of high temperature resistant markings: All red markings are replaced with fluorescent coatings to ensure that they are still clearly visible in an environment of 110℃.
  • Added “three confirmation” steps: confirming the markings, confirming the handwheel status, and confirming the flow direction of the medium.
  • Strengthening training: Conducting simulation drills for operators to strengthen the awareness of the consequences of incorrect operations.

In the final analysis, preventing misoperation does not rely on luck, but on details. Next time you operate a stop valve, remember to take a closer look at the markings and ask more questions, “Is the direction correct?” After all, in a thermal power plant, a small mistake may be the beginning of a major accident. If you also work in a power plant, you might as well share these methods with your colleagues. Only by standardizing the operating procedures together can the safe operation of the power plant be more guaranteed.
