Premium solutions designed to monitor, filter, and control heavy machinery in demanding plant environments.
Bangladesh is undergoing a massive industrial transformation. From the traditional ready-made garments (RMG) sector, the nation's economic landscape has rapidly expanded into capital-intensive heavy industries, including steel re-rolling mills, cement manufacturing plants, chemical processing facilities, and utility-scale thermal and hydroelectric power plants. Cities like Chittagong, Dhaka, Gazipur, and Narayanganj have emerged as major manufacturing hubs.
At the heart of this industrial expansion lies the mechanical power transmission systems that keep factories running. Rotating machinery such as steam turbines, heavy-duty electric motors, grinding mills, and rotary kilns rely heavily on precision bearings. When a high-capacity bearing fails, it can result in catastrophic downtime, costing factory operators thousands of dollars per hour. Consequently, understanding and implementing advanced bearing repair methods has become a top priority for factory managers, maintenance engineers, and bearing manufacturers operating in Bangladesh.
Industrial bearings, particularly large-diameter spherical roller bearings, cylindrical roller bearings, and Babbitt alloy fluid-film bearings, represent a significant capital investment. Throwing away a worn bearing is often unnecessary, as professional refurbishment can restore the component to 90% to 100% of its original service life at a fraction of the cost. Below are the primary repair methodologies utilized by leading manufacturers and specialized service workshops:
Babbitt metal bearings (journal bearings) are widely used in critical high-speed rotating equipment such as steam turbines, turbogenerators, and heavy gearboxes. Over time, these bearings suffer from fatigue, cavitation, scoring, or thermal degradation. The repair process involves:
For rolling element bearings, wear typically occurs on the shaft journal seat or within the housing bore. When these mating surfaces lose their dimensional tolerances, the bearing inner or outer ring can slip, leading to severe vibration and heat generation.
Laser Cladding is a state-of-the-art repair method where a high-energy laser beam melts a metal powder (such as cobalt or nickel-based alloys) onto the worn surface. This process creates a metallurgical bond with minimal heat-affected zones, preventing thermal distortion of the shaft. Once cladded, the surface is ground back to the exact micrometer tolerance required for a proper interference fit.
When the raceways of large roller bearings exhibit minor spalling, pitting, or superficial wear, they can be remanufactured. The process involves grinding the worn raceways to remove surface defects and restore the original profile geometry. Because grinding increases the clearance between the inner and outer rings, the repair facility must install precision-matched, oversized rolling elements (balls or rollers) and design a custom cage to maintain the original internal clearance specifications.
Superfinishing is a low-temperature micro-stoning process that removes the amorphous "smear layer" left by grinding. It improves the surface finish to a mirror-like quality, reducing friction, lowering operating temperatures, and significantly extending the fatigue life of the repaired bearing. This is particularly beneficial in high-speed applications like turbine generators and compressor shafts.
How bearing repair and preventative maintenance keep key sectors operational across the country.
Bangladesh's massive cement industry relies on massive rotary kilns and ball mills. The support rollers and thrust bearings operate under extreme loads and dusty environments. Regular on-site inspection, polishing, and Babbitt re-casting prevent catastrophic structural failures.
Power stations in Ashuganj, Ghorashal, and Payra run large steam turbines. The rotor shaft bearings require absolute precision. Hydrodynamic journal bearing repair, coupled with oil filtration systems using high-grade elements, ensures uninterrupted power grid stability.
Steel plants in Chittagong subject roll neck bearings to extreme shock loads and cooling water contamination. Refurbishing these multi-row cylindrical roller bearings via raceway regrinding saves millions in replacement costs annually.

In heavy industrial environments, bearing repair should be viewed as a secondary line of defense. The primary objective is always to prevent wear through robust predictive maintenance and high-efficiency filtration. Over 70% of all premature rolling element bearing failures are caused by lubrication issues, including contamination by solid particles, moisture ingress, or oil degradation.
For high-speed machinery like steam turbines, the lubricating oil must be kept extremely clean. Using advanced filtration elements, such as the Filter element QF1D350CJJHC or the Cellulose filter element LX-DEA16XR-JL, ensures that sub-micron particles are trapped before they can enter the bearing clearance zone. When hard particles enter the bearing, they cause micro-indentations on the raceway. As the rollers repeatedly pass over these indentations, stress concentrations develop, eventually leading to subsurface fatigue and spalling.
Furthermore, monitoring parameters such as shaft vibration and rotational speed using precision instruments like the Turbine Rotation Speed Monitor HZQS-02A or the Intelligent Rotational Speed Monitor WZ-3C-A allows engineers to detect early-stage bearing anomalies. A sudden increase in vibration amplitude or a change in the frequency spectrum often points to inner ring wear or cage instability, giving maintenance teams ample warning to schedule a planned repair before a catastrophic failure occurs.
