Replacing a Babbitt bearing involves highly specialized metallurgical and machining processes. The procedure begins with the removal of the worn alloy from the backing shell, usually made of cast iron, steel, or bronze. The shell is then meticulously cleaned and prepared through chemical degreasing and abrasive blasting. To ensure a flawless bond, the shell undergoes a "tinning" process, where a thin layer of pure tin is applied to the hot backing shell. The replacement Babbitt alloy is then cast using either static pouring or centrifugal casting methods. Centrifugal casting is highly preferred for cylindrical bearings as it uses centrifugal force to eliminate air pockets, impurities, and voids, resulting in a denser, highly uniform grain structure.
Once cast, the bearing is machined to exact tolerances using high-precision CNC equipment. In heavy industrial plants, clearances are measured in micrometers. A clearance that is too tight can cause thermal runaway, while a clearance that is too loose can induce oil whip or whirl, leading to severe vibration. Non-destructive testing (NDT), such as ultrasonic testing (UT) and dye penetrant inspection, is carried out to ensure 100% bonding integrity between the Babbitt and the backing shell.
