In thermal and nuclear power plants, the steam turbine is the heart of the electricity generation process. Operating at extreme rotational speeds—often up to 3,000 or 3,600 RPM—while supporting rotors weighing dozens of tons, requires an exceptionally robust support system. The steam turbine bearing serves as this critical mechanical interface. It is designed to handle immense radial and axial loads while minimizing friction, preventing rotor dynamic instability, and ensuring continuous power generation output.
Without high-performance bearing systems, the dynamic forces generated by high-pressure steam expanding through the turbine blades would lead to catastrophic structural failure. Modern power utilities demand bearing designs that not only withstand these extreme operational parameters but also offer predictability, long service lifespans, and minimal maintenance overhead. Babbitt alloy (or white metal) bearings remain the industry standard, providing the perfect balance of load capacity, conformability, and embeddability to protect the turbine shaft from wear.
Steam turbine bearing arrangements typically consist of two primary types of hydrodynamic bearings, each serving a distinct mechanical function within the rotor train:
Radial journal bearings support the weight of the turbine rotor and control its lateral positioning. In utility-scale power generation, tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs) are widely preferred over fixed-profile sleeve bearings. TPJBs feature individual pads that pivot independently to accommodate shaft misalignment and eliminate oil whip and whirl—vibrational phenomena that can destroy a turbine at high speeds. These bearings rely on the hydrodynamic generation of a thin oil film, typically between 20 to 50 microns thick, which separates the rotating shaft journal from the stationary bearing pads.
As high-pressure steam flows through the turbine blades, it exerts a massive axial force along the shaft. Tilting pad thrust bearings (often utilizing Kingsbury or Mitchell self-equalizing designs) are engineered to absorb this thrust. The self-equalizing linkages distribute the axial load evenly across all thrust pads, preventing localized overheating and film breakdown. The reliability of these bearings dictates the safety margin of the entire generator set, making real-time monitoring of thrust pad temperatures a critical operational metric.
During the startup (turning gear operation) and shutdown phases of a steam turbine, the shaft rotates too slowly to generate a hydrodynamic oil film. To prevent metal-to-metal contact and preserve the Babbitt alloy lining, a hydrostatic jacking oil system (or lift oil system) is activated. High-pressure oil is pumped directly beneath the shaft journal to lift the rotor. This process requires absolute oil cleanliness, where specialized filtration units such as the Jacking oil pump filter element HBX-250x10 play a vital role in preventing particulate contamination from entering the bearing clearance zone.

Traditional tin-based Babbitt (ASTM B23 Grade 2) remains popular due to its excellent conformability and surface-damage tolerance. However, for high-load applications, engineers are turning to advanced copper-backed Babbitt structures or polymer-lined tilting pads (PEEK/PTFE). Polymer bearings offer higher thermal thresholds and can operate with thinner lubrication films, reducing frictional losses by up to 30% and significantly enhancing overall turbine efficiency.
